Asian International Arbitration Centre event titled "The Road to Kairos"

01 Oct 2025

Our Dato' Log. Ts. Dr. Chang Kah Loon, PhD (Maritime Logistics) (USM), FCILT, FLogM; Log. Ts. Amy Ooi, FCILT, FLogM; and Log. Eunice Chang Qi Ying, CMILT, MLogM, who are also Certified Logistics Mediators (CLM), were invited to attend the AIAC (Asian International Arbitration Centre) event titled "The Road to Kairos," held in Penang on 30 September 2025 (Tue).

The Assistant Director of AIAC, Mr. Danesh Chandran Velaitham, was invited to deliver his opening remarks and shared the importance of AIAC's existence in the region generally and in Malaysia in particular.

A total of two sessions of sharing took place, covering “Breakdowns and Breaches: Resolving Operational and Supply Chain Disputes with ADR” and “Smooth Sailing or Legal Storm? Navigating Shipping Disputes with ADR”. The panellists were mostly practising lawyers from various states in Malaysia, except for one industry practitioner, who's a senior logistician (FLogM), an Hon. Advisor to LogM, and Chairman of Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB), Dato’ Seri Log. Syed Mohamad Syed Murtaza, FLogM.

The Council of Justices of the Peace (JP), State of Penang, was also represented by its President, Dato’ Kho Hai Meng, JP, and Secretary, Dato' Ts. Ong Seng Huat, JP, and several members of its Mediation Bureau, some of whom are also members of the Society of JP Community Mediators.

Professionals from the professional bodies, such as CILT, LogM, and RISM, were also present. Overall, the response was encouraging, with approximately 50 participants attending. We look forward to the next sharing session, where we hope to include more professionals, such as logisticians and master mariners, and implement more practical means for sharing if logistics, transport, and supply chain-related topics are duly raised and selected.

"Logistician = Freight Forwarder?"

A freight forwarder, who may be an individual but is typically an organisation licensed by the Customs, serves as an intermediary who arranges the shipment of goods on behalf of third parties. Their primary task is to facilitate the transport of goods from the point of origin to the point of destination, coordinating all logistical and administrative aspects involved in the processes of consignment.

A logistician, or better be known as professional logistician, is a qualified and certified individual who has at least 5 years of practical experience in the related field and has either passed a Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) in Logistics and Transport from CILT, a LogM Qualifying Examination Certificate (LogM QEC) in Logistics Management from LogM, or has an equivalent qualification, like a bachelor's degree in logistics, transport, or supply chain. This individual is professionally admitted to either (or both) the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), established in the UK since 1919, or The Society of Logisticians Malaysia (Pertubuhan Pakar Logistik Malaysia | LogM), a Malaysian professional body. In short, a professional logistician, with the relevant professional qualifications, plans, performs, manages, coordinates, and oversees the supply chain or flow of processes in a shipping line, airline, transportation, freight forwarding, manufacturing, or another related organisation covering the movement of people and goods. Some professional logisticians are with the government and academia or may serve as consultants, mediators, arbitrators, or expert witnesses, too.

👉 Fellows of LogM (FLogM/ senior logistician) and Members of LogM (MLogM/ logistician) are entitled to carry the professional collective mark or prefix "Log." pursuant to the Trademarks Act 2019 and Trademarks Regulations 2019.
